The Breech Presentation types
There is actually more than one type of breech presentation, we traditionally think feet first, but there are two other common breech positions that your baby might find itself in:
1. Frank: Baby’s buttocks are pointing towards the birth canal, the feet are close to the head with the legs to be found in front of the body;
2. Complete: Baby’s buttocks are pointing towards the birth canal; the feet are close to the buttocks because the knees are in a bended position;
3. Footling: The feet are pointed towards the birth canal.
Why a Breech Presentation?
Breech presentation is not fully understood but there are some theories as to why babies turn themselves around:
1. When there is more than one baby in the womb it may be that one or even both will turn into a breech presentation;
2. Sometimes if the mother of the baby has a previous history of premature births they will have a baby that turns into breech presentation;
3. It may be that there is too much or too little amniotic fluid;
4. Women that have a condition called placenta previa may experience a breech presentation;
5. If the uterus is an uneven shape or there are fibroids present.
